If I am awake enough to understand what you are describing, that
is an "RF choke", designed to help reduce radio frequency energey
>from interfering with the modems electronics. It consists of a
ferrite code with the phone wires wrapping around it a few times.

This is one of those things that you'll probably not need, but is
very useful when you do. There are many sources of RF out there
in the world, and keeping it out of the modem is a good thing.
