Newmedia did have a 'cheap' line of cards, which was of lower quality than their regular line,
but even so your 'naked connector' problem sounds strange - maybe your card came
with a defective cable? Anyway, the Livewire dongles are unambiguous, as were (are?) those of their highly regarded Bus Toaster
SCSI card.

Well, since their website seems to be back up, you can always cc them a copy of your post here. In my experience, this sort of
letter - even years after the fact - can result in much happiness for
the writer.
