Apart from anything else, UNIX based machines will let you install applications without having to reboot your machine. I've lost count of the number of times i've had to reboot NT4 because I've needed to install something halfway through the day. This means I have to shut down my ongoing work and restart it again. What sort of mickey mouse (tm) operating system is that?

We've got solaris machines here that don't get rebooted for months on end, I'd like to see my NT4 box last just one week.

Probably for the same reason that some others run Solaris and other "unsupported" OSs on our ThinkPads (mine triple boots PC DOS 7, NT4 (SP3) as preloaded by IBM, and Solaris 7 x86). Solaris allows me to do some things WinNT and/or 95/98 don't so I use it when appropriate.

It is MUCH more stable which is why we use Solaris to control equipment in the lab instead of NT. Intel Solaris also cooperates with other UNIX machines better than anything from MS (as did Warp also - IBM marketed an X server for OS/2 along with NFS, etc). I used to run
Warp on notebooks but Solaris meets my current needs better when I don't have to deal with MS Office docs (which is about the only reason for me to run Windows).

I just spent quite a bit of time rebuilding NT on my 770E - it freezes, gets access exceptions, and in general acts up. The IBM and MS solution so far is reinstall and install the latest versions of everything including drivers. Oh what fun...

The same hardware runs fine with Solaris 7 x86. Must be some fun driver issue(s) somewhere ...
