Interesting: that makes the 340MB drive about $500, whereas calluna's PCMCIA 340MB drive is £170 = $275. SmartMedia 32MB is approx $64 if you buy Rio devices, which is only slightly more than IBM's price.

Subject: IBM Microdrives available where?

Hello!
I'm intrigued by IBM's Compact Flash II microdrives (170MB, 340MB) which according to their website have been shipping since June. But the website won't sell them, and the IBM store here in Ottawa
can't even find them in their computer with the number from the site.
I originally thought they'd be too expensive for anything non-business, but then I saw the price of 64MB CF items (I forget
but it was over C$200) and suddenly the drives didn't seem so bad. The latest PC Magazine mentions a price of about U$1.50 per
megabyte for the drives, vs. $5 for the regular CF cards, I think.
What I'm wondering, is if they'd be practical (a) for a portable mp3 player such as the Lyra just released; and (b) for a digital camera like the Kodak "Editors Choice" in the latest PC. Or will they suck the batteries dry? Unfortunately the cameras that have slightly more appeal (the higher-grade editor's choice, and the Nikon which I've actually held) don't use CF.
Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!
andrew
