Havind taken the screen off my 755C I found that the connectors, although superficially looking the same, have different pin-outs. So that won't work. The lack of availability of spares is doubly frustrating as (1) the cable unplugs at the screen end as well and (2) there is an IBM part number on the cable, 84G6457.

So I have bared the ends of the break in the cable to allow me to buzz it out. The cable pitch is very fine - finer than the smallest surface mount I can reliably solder, so fixing the cable looks iffy, but worth a try. My other option (unless I can source a spare) is to make another cable. The ends look like standard connectors, it should just be a matter of joining them up with some fine-pitch ribbon cable, once I've worked out the pinouts.

In the meantime, any suggestions for thinkpad 'scrapyard' merchants who might be worth trying for this cable would be welcome.

depending on the reason for the 'damage' it MIGHT be repairable, but unless it is near one of the plug or socket ends i doubt any repair would hold.. repairing the cable itself is, IMO, impossible..

maybe, depending on the display..

no, no cable. they sell this stuff by the entire assembly..
look around and see if there is a busted display machine available any place..
