Hello,

I had the same problem on my desktop. PM 4 can only see 8 GB because of a
BIOS limitation. There is a White Paper on various limitations at one
of the HD makers websites.

Basically the CHS (Cylinder, Head, Sector) method of defining a Hard Drive
has an 8 GB limit. There is a "magic" number that is reported back in
the Cylinder count that indicates the total number of LBA sectors should be
used instead of the CHS. An Old BIOS will take that number as the actual
cylinder count.

I was fortunate as there was an BIOS update for my desktop that handled
drives greater than 8.4 Gigs. I assume Ontrack Disk Manager and the
like can also handle it but I would check for a BIOS upgrade first.

I seem to remember that PM4 indicated errors in the partition table if
you tried to partition a drive over 8.4 Gigs in a system with old bios
and no Disk Manager.

Subject: new HD: can only see 8gb of 10

I've got my new 10gig HD in the ultraslimbay and I'm playing with
it with Partition Magic v4.

No matter what I do, it reports only 8047.2MB. Is this a
limitation of my TP600? Is there some way to get at the other 2gb?
 I don't care if it's a separate partition. IBM's site seems mute
on this subject.

Thanks!

andrew
