There was a problem with freezing after being connected a
while, which could be dealt with by a modem initialization string.

But yours doesn't sound like that.

I have used bios o for almost 4 years. At the beginning I was
using the internal modem. It worked OK.

Later I upgraded to an IBM 33.6 modem, and have been very
happy. At the time, they were available cheaply on ebay.
