I can record just fine if I pull the mic out and talk at the box, letting the internal mic pick it up. "Fine", but it sounds awful. I've been through all the mixer selections, making sure the mic was selected, etc.

This problem has come up on the list a number of times before and
involving a number of different Thinkpad models. As Birger Petterson

As a temporary measure, you might find that pulling the mic out just
a little bit from the jack will fix the problem. However, it's been
my experience that the "ThinkPad Adapter Converter" is the right
solution in the long run.
