A microphone (mic in) almost always will have a much lower signal
output level (the amplitude of the electrical signal in the wire)
than will another device such as a CD player (line in). You can
use the "Mic in" but you will need an attenuator to drop the
signal level from whatever you are feeding into this input such
that it does not get overloaded. When it does, the sound will
become distorted.
Shops such as Radio Shack probably have something that'd work.
You may even be able to find a cable with a built-in attenuator.
