My solution to the digitial vs. analog flat panel problem was to buy a
Selectadock III and buy a digital video card and flat panel. In my
particular case, I'm driving an SGI 1600SW with the Number 9 card using the
ThinkPad 770Z.

You are right - no matter how good the analog interface, the direct digitial
interface will always look much clearer.

I'm using the Apple flat panel monitor with a HP Omnibook 800.
No problems at all but it takes a bit of fiddling to get a good image
quality. I'd buy it again ... (mainly running Linux but there were no
problems with the W95 driver either)

One caveat: you may get close to the quality of the built-in TFT but
comparing a digital to an analog display interface is a bit unfair,
you will never get the same quality :-)
