The other day I had something similar happen to my z50. Not the frying
stuff, thank God, but a refusal to start up. I went to the manual which
suggested removing the battery and the AC adaptor, then putting the battery
back in and reconnecting the the AC. That worked. The machine came back to
life. The battery was dead, but charged right up on the AC.

Hello.
My z50 has also indicated some charge left. I decided to run 'till it drop, the battery warning came up. it than showed battery time remaining, " unsupported ". When it went " dead ", I put it on mains power, it responded by making a slight frying sound and smoking. The frying sound, O.K., but smoking?. I would expect better from something the likes of IBM. Called to get EZ served, there just might be a problem with the z50s.
P.S. No, I was not doing anything strange to the z50, well at least nothing that the other thnkpads have not had problems with!.
