Spent all weekend trying to get my wife's WP back in action.

Here's what I learned...

First, the manual claims that Z50 needs L103 batteries for backup,
but they sure looked like AAA-sized Alkaline Energizers to me,
so now the WP happily runs on pink bunny backup power.

Second, if your WP puts out a dial tone, then dials, and then
announces "no dial tone", it's because your wife set the modem to
"USA/Canada". Set it back to "Japan" so it will actually pick up the
lines in the USA again.

Third, their is no use trying to explain how important default settings
are - even if they defy logic (see above).

Fourth, pulling the batteries to reset the OS is much faster than
reinstalling software . If I were king, this new feature would be made
mandatory on every PC immediately. Don't ask me how - it's just cool.

Finally, their is absolutely nothing that pulling all the batteries out
can't cure. However, you'll be in a catch-22. If you do a backup, then
pull the batteries, then restore, you could end up copying the problem
right back to the WP. On the other hand, if you do a "sync" to
Outlook, pull the batteries, and then try to "sync" again, the software
will be convinced that the first WP profile is different from the second
one - even if they both have the same name. Neither sync nor
backup will solve every problem.

It's still a great widget, but I'm really glad I didn't pay $1K for it.

Mark
