I've had many older Thinkpads, like the 360 and 701CS, and recently wanted
to buy a mainstream laptop for around $1000. I didn't know IBM sold a laptop
in this price range and I thought I'd never afford a new Thinkpad, so I
about fell over when I saw the Thinkpad 1420i selling new for $1100. Based
upon the excellent luck I've had with them, I didn't hesitate a second
buying one.
Overall I'm satisfied with it for a laptop in the $1000 range, but IMO
that's about all it is. Put it up against traditional IBM laptops and you
can really tell the quality difference both in performance and workmanship.
Also, I wasn't too enthusiastic to hear the day after I bought it new that
most of them need new system boards to permanently get rid of the USB whine
problem.
