I agree that it certainly sounds like a hardware problem, but after THREE new
drives he still gets the same sturm und drang?

Some of the "Utilities" from Mr. Norton will cause similar noises to emanate

My point was that you can't automatically rule the software out of the equation,
especially since, IIRC, we weren't given _any_ info on the OS or what he's
running on this system.
