I recently installed W2K on my 770ED with 128MB RAM in a dual boot
configuration with Windows 98 SE. Only thing you need to do is upgrade the
BIOS to the latest version before you do the install. W2K also includes all
of the drivers needed for operation except the MPEG driver for DVD playback,
which can be downloaded from the IBM website. The only other driver that
would be needed off the website is the Thinkpad Features program. As far as
the DVD player, I use the included one from Microsoft and it works great.

I would personally do a clean installation if I could. After using W2K for
the past few weeks on my 770ED, I am thinking about removing the Windows 98
installation. W2k, for me, runs so much smoother and faster and is much more
stable. It is noticeably quicker than Windows 98, and suspend and resume is
much faster also.

Subject: Q: Upgrading TP770e to W2K...

Hello,

I'am thinking of upgrading my Thinkpad 770E (160 MB RAM, DVD with Enhanced
Video Adapter, Xircom Realport Cardbus Ethernet/Modem...), which currently
still runs Win 95 OSR 2.x, to Windows 2000 Pro and would like to know if
this makes sense with only 160MB RAM or not. Further I would like to hear
some experiences from the kind people on this list, which might have made
this move already successfully with their 770e.

Are there any special things to care about, which are not mentioned on the
IBM Website? As for example BIOS updates which doesn't work, deinstallation
of previous installed TP drivers and tools, installation of special older
drivers than the actual ones etc. ? Are the DVD and Enhanced Video Adapter
supported by new IBM drivers under Win 2000?

And finally, is an update from Win 95 to Win 2000 Pro or a fresh
installation of Win 2000 the better way to do it?

Thanks in advance for any qualified and helpful comments and hints,

Valentino Kyriakides
