First of all, thanks for your comments and hints!

I've successfully installed W2K now on my Thinkpad from a clean
installation, since my first installation (an upgrade from Win 95) left over
too much garbled Win 95 stuff on the main partition, which resulted in
undeleteable Win95 things. Here are in short the steps I've took for a fresh
installation:

1. I upgraded my TP770E BIOS to the latest available version...

2. I checked if I have to upgrade the firmware of my DVD too (I didn't
needed to upgrade)

3. For security reasons I've made/build the 4 W2K setup disks from the W2K
CD...

4. I booted with a Win 95 bootfloppy and formated/erased the C: drive
completely...

5. I inserted the W2K CD and booted with the previously made W2K setup
floppies (however, I think one can also boot directly from the W2K CD if
desired by changing the boot order in the TP BIOS) and started the
installation process...

6. I've installed the newest W2K supported ThinkPad Configuration
utilities...

7. For today I finally left over to install DVDExpress and the W2K update
drivers for DVDExpress and also to check if my Xircom Realport cardbus
Ethernet/Modem card works without new drivers under W2K...

BTW, the following URL http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-4EBQAK.html is
an updated TP 770E/ED - Microsoft Windows 2000 Support Guide, which lists
detailed installation instructions and needed device drivers etc.

Greetings
