Several possibilities:

The small switch that senses lid open/close is stuck in the
closed position (had this happen with an older ThinkPad 755CX-
blew out the switch area with compressed air and things started
working right. The switch might also be going bad ...

The inverter board is on its last legs. I have had them fail on
both a 765D and a 770E - using Fn-F4 or open/closing sometimes
turned the inverter on - getting an image. If this is the
problem, the machine is actually running and there is stuff
on the display but you can't see it as the backlight is off.
Shine a VERY bright light onto the screen to see if there is
anything there (mouse pointer in Windows for example). If
the mouse moves, or you can see text with the bright light,
your inverter board needs replacing. Easy Serv fixed our
two machines - so far so good.

There may be many other things that would cause your problem
but I have had the above two happen.

Stuart
