I'm a big fan of trailing edge technology, but that's also because my
needs are generally modest (word processing, surfing, MP3 jukebox and
the occasional game). The only things, to me, that require bleeding-edge
technology are digital audio/video editing/rendering/sequencing. If you
don't do any of those, chances are good that you will be happy with
something that's been on the market for a year or more. It will save you
a lot of money compared to current top-end models, and won't be much
slower. Also, software support is likely to be better. If you can still
find a TP600 series machine, I think those are a great deal. They were
top-of-the-line when introduced, very well built and plenty fast.
For TFT screens, if there only a few dead/stuck pixels, far apart, you
can't return the unit. All manufacturers have their own guidelines on
accepting "defective" screens, and you usually need 10+ stuck pixels or
a cluster of them within a small distance for the screen to be
considered defective. In any case perfect screens are becoming more
common now, and you're not likely to notice 5 or 6 stuck pixels out of
the 700,000 on your screen. That's less than 0.001% of defects. Pretty
amazing if you put it into perspective.
I own a 560x, and have been very happy with it, except that the keyboard
is starting to go. Given a choice I would buy IBM again, but I'd buy one
with a 3 year warranty...
