Thanks for your comments. The problem is that neither machine is password
protected: I have been able to boot, partition the disk, install a couple
of operating systems (Win98, OS/2) on either machine. Passwords are being
requested only when I swap the drives, or insert one of the drives in the
other machine, using the UltraSlimBay 2nd HDD adapter. This is really
weird. Let's hope the virgin Toshiba 18GB I just bought won't exhibit the
same behaviour.
