Why you get duplicate replies

That's very common. You will get two copies of this message as well. When
people reply to a message in the list, they often use "Reply to All", which
sends copies of the email both to the original sender and to the mailing
list. So you get one copy that's sent directly to you, and one copy that the
list forwarded. If you look at the message headers, the two messages will
reflect this.

Nope, that's not it. Your email client keeps track of which messages it's
downloaded from the server, even if you are not deleting the messages from
the server. Sometimes this will get out of whack and you'll get duplicate
messages, but then you will get a bunch of duplicates--all the messages the
server still has in its file--not just a few.
