auto-disable on trackpoint

I've been using a Microsoft Intellimouse with my TP600E and a port
replicator for months now with great success, the trick to getting the
scrolling wheel to work was to set the trackpoint to "auto-disable" so that
it would be disabled when an external mouse was detected on bootup.

All was well and good until recently. No changes were made in the Thinkpad
configuration and the Trackpoint was still set to "Auto Disable" yet it
doesn't seem to detect the mouse on bootup and leaves the trackpoint active
causing the pointer to go absolutely nuts. I have to manually disable to
Trackpoint and reboot to use an external mouse and then set it back to
active to use the trackpoint out on the road. While this works fine, it's a
pain in the butt.

I've also tried reinstalling the Intellimouse drivers and that hasn't fixed
the auto-disable problem either. Any ideas?
