Hi Jeff,
your friend certainly can get a nice affordable ThinkPad to suit his
needs....
The following is based entirely on my personal experience with
ThinkPads....and I'm sure you'll get other great input from ThinkPad list
members...

For pure word processing, I find the keyboards on the 700 series ThinkPads
to be the best made to date.... they have great feel, are forgiving yet
accurate, and the full keyboard size makes no compromises.
760 style keyboards are not as good (feel or accuracy) as the 755 series,
and I think finding a good keyboard on 760 series is tougher , since they do
wear out much easier than 755's....still, the 760's can be very enjoyable if
you have a good one...
Another great keyboard is the 560 series, which is also extremely thin and
lightweight. Again, finding a GOOD unit is the key here. The combination
of lightweight, and the excellent battery life of the 560's is another plus
for those who like to do wordprocessing...

One big thing the 760 series has going for it is the great availability of
parts and upgrades, and the ease of swapping devices. It's a tremendous
value....

Feel free to contact me directly if you have specific model questions...
because to answer one of your questions, YES -- there are large variations
within the 760 series family which I recommend you become familiar with ....

I'll stop here and let others keep crankin' with info....

Have a Great Day,
Denis Hall, Michigan
