An IBM Home and Away PCMCIA Ethernet card / 14.4 modem costs
less than $30 on ebay and contains a "modem saver" (I presume
in the case that attaches to the card). I don't know how well
this works against digital or PBX stuff.

The Ethernet part works well, but can be a bear to install.
