There is a hidden trick to this.... (Save this message, you will need it
again at some point!)

There are two ways to connect a Windows 98 machine to an NT Server:
workgroup and domain.

The workgroup method is the default, which is problematic as you have
discovered. If you have a Windows Domain set up, (and you should, since you
have an NT Server), you can switch to using the Domain method. This method
is, of course, hidden by the Microsoft User Interface police.

Here is the trick:

1. Boot once without logging on. Right-click on the Network Neighborhood
icon on the Desktop and choose Properties... You should see a tabbed dialog
with three tabs called Configuration, Identification and Access Control.
Under Configuration, the default, you should see a list "The following
network components are installed:" The list on my computer reads: "Client
for Microsoft Networks, 3Com fast...., Dial-Up Adapter, TCP/IP _> 3Com...,
TCP/IP -> Dial-Up adapter"

If you don't see a list that looks similar, then that was part of your
problem and should be fixed. You ONLY care about TCP/IP as a protocol both
on here and at the Server. All the other wacky protocols are for strange
legacy systems and can be ignored or removed, once everything is cool.

2. Left-Click on Client for Microsoft Networks to select it and then click
on the Properties button below. You should see a dialog called Client for
Microsoft Networks Properties with a single tab called General. The tab is
split in two and the top part is Logon Validation.

3. Click on "Log on to Windows NT Domain" to select it and enter your
Windows Domain name in the box below. Leave the default Logon and restore
Network connections selected in the lower panel.

4. Click OK and OK and then restart.

5. After restart, you should now see a new three part login Dialog with your
User name (remembered), password (blank) and the Domain Name (remembered).

6. Enter your password and be happy.
