Windows 2000 with Service Pack 1 installed: Every time I try to save a
password on a Dial-up connection, it doesn't save it. Instead, it retrieves
this sixteen-character password from somewhere, and presents that as the
saved password. Trying to change it under Control Panel -> Internet Options
-> Connections doesn't do it, either. That sixteen-character string keeps
coming back. Since it's a password, the sixteen-character string just shows
up as sixteen asterisks, and I don't know what the string is.
I've checked Microsoft's site for insight, and there is quite a history of
problems saving passwords in Dial-up connections, ever since W95. For W95
and W98, there's quite a few methods outlined to deal with the problem,
>from reinstalling Dial-Up Networking to changing registry data. But for
Windows 2000, all I see is "make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks is
installed and enabled". I've done that.... at least it shows up in the
Properties of the Dial-up connection as installed and checked. I've tried
uninstalling and installing the Client. No change.
Windows 2000 seems to have changed password handling. There aren't any
*.pwl files anymore, as far as I can tell. So.... anybody have any ideas?
