the 701 keyboard is composed of two "membranes" (one for each half) and its
rather easy to get into it and clean the "contacts"..
BUT, these "contacts" are little more than printed wiring..

go into easy setup (hold down the F1 key while powering the 701 on..
select the test icon, then hit Ctrl-A, then Ctrl-K..
you will be presented with a keyboard layout..
depress each key and the related point in the display kbd will turn on or
off..

try it..

works with most thinkpads..
