I too had a similar experience buying an old 701C. When I popped the
plastic buttons off to see what was underneath, I found that the little
metal dome/bubble underneath the left button was cracked, presumably from
being clicked so many times. I swapped the two little metal domes between
the left and right buttons and secured them with some tape, and that
helped considerably.
