I can't speak about Linux, but I can speak about my i1451 and i1480.

My main OpenBSD machine is my i1480, where I have everything but
the DVD and winmodem working. This means that the trackpoint was
seen as a PS/2 mouse (/dev/psm0), the sound works, the video chip
set (ati mobility p) is supported, etc. All in all the i1480 has been a
great machine for me and OpenBSD.

I suspect that your biggest problem might be the sound card--I don't
remember that it uses, but when I saw it I had the vague feeling that
it wouldn't work under OpenBSD, but I might be wrong on that.
