This depends on a couple of things...
First of all, if you are looking for the original help files, on-line
instructions, and possibly preinstalled software, the only convenient way to
get it is from the recovery CD. If not, the drivers, etc. are probably on
the IBM website, and a clean install may be better, since you will end up
with the latest versions of drivers, without having to update them
afterwards. Also, if the machine came with Windows98, you are, by
inference, the owner of a license, so you do not have to go out and pay
almost $200 for the "Full-install" version of Windows 98.
Second, Windows 2000 may be a good choice, but only if you can run
everything you need under that operating system. I am still forced to run
Windows 98, since the VPN Client software my company uses is not available
for Windows 2000. Also will cost plenty.
Third, it is possible to run two different operating systems starting with
recovery CDs. You do need a program like Partition Magic, which will allow
you to create more than one Primary Partition, and select which is active.
You can then install the recovery disk, using the "leave existing partitions
and format C only" option, then change active partitions and do the same
thing with the second CD. Then you activate Boot Magic, which comes with
Partition Magic, to select which you want to start. However, you cannot
legitimately have both original OEM installations on one computer, so you
will be in breach of the licensing provisions.
