hi!! i have a thinkpad 770 for the last three years in india. today
it gave me an error 173 - 163 and wouldn't boot. i realized that there
is a supervisor password and a hard disk password set. i dont know
these passwords. i called up the local ibm service but they say that
it will cost almost $1500 to get the motherboard changed to make
the machine useable? they say that the CMOS battery died and now to
set the time-date we need supervisor password.
i checked google and landed at this mailing list. going over the
archives, it seems that the only solution is with Nortek Computers
of Canada. i found some postings with a URL
http://servicepac.de.ibm.com/eprmhtml/epr2a/h4033.htm that should
have given some hints but this link doesnt work anymore. can you
please advice? i may not have the time and money to send the hard
disk to canada to get my data.
thanks a lot!! gaurav
