I'm having a hard time making a new Thinkpad X20 work reliably with Windows
2000. Resuming from Stand-by will often hang with a black screen and a
blinking text underline cursor in the upper right hand corner. This
problem has been mentioned in the IBM support forum with no satisfactory
answer so far.

Unfortunately, until this works reliably, the machine is essentially
useless to me since I can't trust it to stand-by and not lose work. The
stock Win98 configuration does not have this problem but Win98 is not
appropriate for my development work.

The configuration is a stock Win2K retail install plus service pack 1. I
am running all the latest software/drivers/BIOS according to the IBM X20
driver matrix:

Through painful trial and error, I have found that the latest 3Com Ethernet
driver will hang the machine on boot after SP1 is installed. It also
appears to cause the Resume bug to occur more frequently.

One annoyance is that IBM does not include a restore CD with the X20. A
restore partition is installed on the drive and eats up 500MB.

I would like to obtain an IBM factory restore CD so that I can create a
baseline Win2K environment to test against. If anyone can help me obtain
this CD, I would be much obliged. IBM tech support (800-772-2227) will
send X20 owners a CD upon request. This is to accommodate users that
upgrade their hard drives.

I'll will send a full report on my experience to the list once the dust
settles.
