Thanks for that tip, Chuck. On your advice, I checked out ZDNet's
offerings and found PostCast Server, a freeware SMTP server. It's a far
nicer program than ADR is, has a slightly smaller memory footprint, and
has the added benefit of being free compared to $40 for ADR. Since I
was still in the trial period of ADR, I don't have to kick myself for
buying it when I can have something for free to do the same job. Thanks
for the pointer!

The only thing that I used in ADR that PostCast doesn't provide is the
ability to have a username and password for your SMTP server. This
provides additional security by making it even more difficult for
"outside" computers to send mail through your server -- big-time spammer
technique. Both ADR and PostCast can be configured to allow connections
only from the local computer, "localhost," IP address 127.0.0.1, which
makes it pretty much impossible for someone other than you to send mail
through your server.

For those following this thread, running your own SMTP server also has
the small bonus of bypassing the mail servers of "free" e-mail providers
such as Yahoo, MSN, etc. When you send e-mail through these companies'
servers, a small advertisement is appended to your e-mail. By sending
through your own system, you can still use, say, a Yahoo account as I do
for public postings, but not have to bother your recipients with useless
ads at the end of your messages.
