This is strange. I have the same Delkin PCMCIA-to-SmartMedia adapter,
which I use on my TP560X under OS/2. I had never used in with W2K, but
since I have a TP570 running W2K and sitting next to me, I ejected the
card from the TP560X , inserted it into the TP570 (without even rebooting)
and, lo and behold, it was recognised right away and showed up as a
removable disk.

I then shut down and rebooted, with the adapter and a SmartMedia inserted.
At that point, the boot process got stuck in the middle (probably same
situation you experienced). What I did was to eject the SmartMedia from
the Delkin adapter, after which the boot process continued. When W2K was
up, I re-inserted the SmartMedia and it was recognised once again.

I'm not a friend of Microsoft operating systems, but I'd say keep W2K on
your 240X (provided you have enough RAM), since it's the only half-decent
and stable Windows version I've seen so far.
