Well, yeah! You have to load Card & Socket Services before you attempt to run
the CD install from the floppy. It's not included on the CD install floppy
because it's different for almost every Thinkpad series, and frequently
different within a series.

You've got make the HD bootable and then download and install:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DSHY-3NPU8M.html which will add Card & Socket
Services for DOS. Then re-boot and run the CD install utility and Bob's your
Uncle!
