Hi All.

Well, I finally managed to upgrade my TP560x from it's stock installed
Win95 to Win98SE.

I first upgraded the BIOS to the latest version as recommended.

The _biggest_ hurdle was to be able to boot the TP with CDROM services
available. I'm sharing my experience here in the hope that it might be
useful to others.

After formatting the C: drive as bootable drive, I downloaded files

      (pc card services for dos)
      pctpcdos.exe (http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DSHY-3NPU8M.html)

      (drivers for my cd rom drive)
      820xnosd.exe (http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/BBOD-3N5J53.html)

from the IBM site.

I first installed the pccard services since the cdrom drivers wanted
those available.

Note that the pctpcdos install doesn't work quite well. For one it
said it created a config.sys for me in a subdirectory which it
didn't. I had to fake one and get the install to "update" it for it to
generate a usable config.sys file.

At the end I had to modify the config.sys file a lot to get this to
work, I will will include it here in case someone else needs it. This
is based on the generated config.sys file but contains additions and
changes. Basically I loaded dos high, and all the other devices too. I
also commented out

REM DEVICEHIGH=C:\CARDSOFT\SSMSFLSH.SYS

I think this is part of the FLASH option you can select during the
pctpcdos install. I chose not to have it installed, but the config.sys
included it anyway which was a problem since this device driver was
taking up too much RAM preventing the setup program from starting:

    Windows setup requires 'largest executable program size' to be
    at least 442368 bytes to run.

Also note that the CDROM became drive H: not D: as I had
expected.

--------- start here ---------------------
DOS=HIGH, UMB
DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS

REM CardSoft(TM) PCMCIA DRIVERS
REM DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CARDXTND.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\SSCBTI.SYS /numada:2 /ada1skts:2 /ada2skts:2

REM DEVICEHIGH=C:\CARDSOFT\SSMSFLSH.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\CARDSOFT\FTL.EXE

REM DEVICE=C:\CARDSOFT\CARDID.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\CARDSOFT\CARDID.SYS
INSTALL=C:\CARDSOFT\CS_APM.EXE

LASTDRIVE=Z
REM DEVICE=\CD20X\PCMCD20X.SYS /I:10 /P:260 /D:PCMCD001
DEVICEHIGH=\CD20X\PCMCD20X.SYS /I:10 /P:260 /D:PCMCD001

--------- ends here ---------------------

Also note that I had to copy himem.sys to the C: drive as it didn't
exist on there.

As I'm typing this Win98SE seems to be humming along with the
upgrade. I choose the portable install .. we'll see how it goes.

I hope that this information is useful to others.

Many thanks to everyone who tried help, and especially to James
H. E. Maugham who pointed me to the CDROM drivers and provided overall
guidance with his messages, and who also wrote:

Ok James, who's Bob?

PS: My equipment TP560x, 4GB partitioned into two 2GB drives. One for
    use with Linux, the other previously with the standard
    Win95. Refurbished IBM 20x external PCMCIA CDROM drive.

PPS: The install completed, but somehow I've lost access to my
     external drive now again, but under win98 .. hopefully that won't
     take too long to straighen out.
