David, I have not worked with an A-Series, but I have a 770z which came with
Windows98, which I upgraded...

In my experience, the factory install has two characteristics which make it
useful. The first of these is that all drivers, etc., are installed
correctly, and the second is that there is usually some support information,
instructions, etc. which might be useful.

My usual practice has been to do a recovery first from the Recovery CD, then
install Windows 2000 as an upgrade. Windows 2000 will remove the drivers
which are incorrect, and replace most of them with the correct drivers. The
A21 is so new, however, that some drivers may not be included in the
installation set, so you would be wise to check the IBM web site, and
download any drivers specific to your machine.

If you have a stable, working NT4 installation, and lots of installed
programs, I would recommend trying an upgrade over the existing system.
Windows 2000 is pretty "smart" and I have not had any problems either way.

Good luck,
Richard
