Hi everyone
I think I am the latest addition to this family of thinkpad owners.:-)
My name is Alberto and come from Spain.
Recently I retired my old Compaq Pentium laptop. It was a nice one, but
wanted something more solid and a little more ooomph. :-)
As you will see I am sort of an IBM fan in many regards, so my choice of
a Thinkpad was clear. but instead of getting a new one, my interests
went for an specific model, Thinkpad 770. After some time looking I
bought a Thinkpad 770x in pristine condition. It has a Pentium II 300mhz
256 MB RAM and 4GB HDD working mostly under OS/2 and sometimes (the less
the better :-)) under Win95 OSR2. And thats exactly where my problems
begin :-)
I am very satisfied with the laptop, solid, powerful enough, etc....
however I got one problem. Forgive me if my explanations of the problem
are a little bit vague or confusing, but it is all info I got, I would
appreciate any hints or comments about this, it is driving me crazy.
First, I always thought I had the 13.7inch screen. My thinkpad is a 770x
model 9549, but which 9549?? I dont know. If I get into BIOS, system
model number is blank (!) so no way of knowing which specific 9549
model.Using some windows software and os/2 software as well, I am pretty
sure I got the trident 9397dvd with 8mb sgram, so given the info I got I
should have a 13.7inch screen with a maximum resolution of 1280x1024.
However, the same windows and os/2 software tells me the video card is
only able to reach at most 1024x768x32. In fact I cannot get a higher
resolution than 1024x768x32
And all this is related to my biggest problem. The screen looks pretty
good for browsing, writing emails , spreadsheets and such. However it
looks very badly if I try to see for example pics, videos or photographs
in it, with things like colour banding(for instance colour transition
between shades of gray is not unfiform at all), blocky images etc..... I
would love to hear from the experience of others with this screen
looking at pics : I wonder if somehow my screen is stretching the
1024x768 resolution into this fixed 1280x1024 lcd and that creates the
image distortions, I cannot describe it fully, something, like looking
at the pics at an incorrect resolution. I really need some pointers
regarding this, but as both OS/2 and win95 say I am unable to get
1280x1024 it seems to be true. Even if I had the 14.1 screen model, its
native resolution should be then 1024x768, so pictures should look okay.
I insist that fonts and everything else look pretty good, problem is
only with pics and videos.
Well, if you are still with me so far :-) , I think that will do
enough for a first introductory message. Thanks for reading.
Regards
Alberto
