Welcome aboard Alberto. Always nice to hear someone retired a Compaq for a
Thinkpad! ;-)

Check the bottom of the machine for a label which has the model and serial no.
something like this: 9549-7AU, which should be your model number, or possible
9549-7BU if it originally came with Windows NT. The last letter in the serial
no. will more than likely be different if you have a European spec. machine.

The 13.7 inch screen will support 1280X1024 resolution, but only in 64K (16BIT)
color depth. Also, do you have screen expansion enabled? Try using the Fn + F8
key combination to disable it. Also, check your AUTOEXEC.BAT file for a
statement such as C:\Thinkpad\PS2 HVEXP which would enable screen expansion by
default. With your display, if it IS the 13.7"TFT, the 1024X768 setting would
normally result in the desktop being surrounded by a black border as the image
is displayed on the selected pixels.

A 1280X1024 display is exactly that, 1280 pixels wide by 1024 pixels high. You
can't shrink or enlarge the display on an LCD as you can on a CRT, so selecting
lower settings such as 1024X768 results in ONLY those pixels being used and the
remainder are blacked out. You can go here:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-49TDVQ.html to see an example of this
effect. To prevent the LCD from winding up with this black surrounded desktop,
you can "stretch" the desktop to fill the available space, but this results in
the "washed out" effect you notice on images.

Also, go here: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DSHY-3PGT93.html and ensure you
have the latest drivers and BIOS for your system. I would strongly urge that you
profile your machine on the IBM site by clicking on the "Update Profile" button
on the toolbar on the page and entering your model and serial no. You can use
9549-7AU as a model no. to get started and this will result in a personalized
webpage with links to all of the information available for your machine.

Regards,

James
