Thanks Bill. But I have already done that. To wit: I saved all the files to another drive on my desktop unit. Then I deleted the two partitions (2 & 4.4). Then I repartitioned it into one large partition. Then I moved all the files back onto the new partition. The dates on the files indicate that it is the original version of win98. My win98 also has the same dates, however I don't have it installed on any computer, so I saved the user & system data files to another disk. Then I move the user & system files from my win98se drive. (A gamble at best) When I boot up in the TP600, it found dozens of new hardware and after many reboots, it finally got to the point of loading Explorer. It hangs at that point. That is about the last file to load before it is fully loaded. Then it should look for my startup files.
So next I tried to load my cdrom win98 and it always starts out with a scandisk. It then tells me that the LBA (logical block addressing) is disabled at the end of the disk. I don't know how to enable it but it allowed me to bypass it. During scandisk, it found 500+ bad clusters at the 99% point. Right now I'm ready to send it back unless someone can tell me how to "enable" the LBA and then if I'm able to successfully reformat it.By the way, I did try the product key from my win98 cd and it was rejected.
I have saved the files to another disk hoping that it contains IBM TP600 win98 drivers, etc. My original harddrive is win95. I was entitled to an upgrade to win98 when I bought it, but after 10 months of runarounds by many different IBM'er who all stated that I was entitled to and would eventually receive the upgrade. Finally I was told I was never entitled and they closed my file. I spent many hours at many different times trying to get the update. Everytime I called I was referred to a different phone number. I was always told that it was Microsofts fault that my upgrade never came thru. I don't use this system much, but I would like a larger HD on it.

the product code from one version of windows can be used on other versions of windows..

I bought a 6.4 IBM drive from Louie. It already had win98 orig edition on it. Great, because I have a unused win98 CD. My 3.2 gig drive still has win 95 on it. So I thought I'd upgrade my TP600 to 98. When I booted up the new drive it asks for the long product code of which I don't have for the new drive. So I moved a User and system data files to the drive. It now loads up to the point where it tries to load explorer. Then I get an error message and cannot proceed. So I tried to load my CDROM and it wont let me beyond scandisk. I get a LBA error. Scandisk can't fix that. What do I do? I've already eaten ther jellybeans. Is there a way around the LBA error or is there a way I can overcome the explorer error?
Help!
