The HDD on my TP600 PII300 has started to make an odd metalic type noise
every 40 or 50 seconds. The only time this noise happened before was a split
second before the machine switched off. I have run a diagnostic program
called filemon that looks at background activity in windows and the noise
seems to coincide with the HDD accessing MSGSRV32. The problem seemed to
coincide with when I updated the modem to the latest version of V90.

I have reformatted the HDD, reinstalled W98 and all drivers, updated the
bios and even removed and re-inserted the drive and the problem still
persists, although the machine is working fine I am concerned this noise may
be indicative of a problem with the HDD. I have run the IBM HDD fitness
test and all the bios test programs with no problems showing up.
Would anyone have an idea what is causing this?
Thanks
Colin
