I don't think you really have a problem. What you describe is normal for my 600. It has to do with the screen expansion feature that expands a 640 x 480 screen (I think) to 1024x768 in hardware.
You can change the setting with the ThinkPad Configuration\Display\LCD utility or just use the Fn-F8 key combo to toggle the setting back and forth. You probably need to get the drivers reinstalled
correctly since you were changing things around.
