Mike,
Yes, you can easily dual boot W98 or ME and W2K. My personal preference would be
to give ME a wide berth as it's bloatware of the worst sort, stick with W98SE
although W98Lite is even better http://www.98lite.net/.
First thing is to make sure that your parimary partition is formatted in FAT32
and _NOT_ NTFS5. If you've converted the partition to NTFS by running the W2K
conversion utility, we're going to have problems.
If the partition is FAT32, then we can go ahead. The following is something you
should have normally done anyway, but just in case things go wrong during the
W98 setup, you should:
1. Make an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD)! Start> Programs> Accessories> System
Tools> Backup and click on Emergency Repair Disk.
2. Install the Windows 2000 Recovery Console. It should be available in the i386
folder on your HD, although you might have to search for it.
- Click Start
- click Run
- type C:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons in the Open box
Follow the instructions and then re-boot.
The ideal setup would be to load W98 to a separate partition, but it's not
_absolutely_ necessary. But, if you ever want to use the recovery CD to
re-install W2K on your machine, not installing W98 to a separate partition will
result in losing it when you run the recovery utility. See
http://www.thinkpads.com/hints.htm
The W98 (and ME) CDs are bootable and you can boot either and install them
directly from the CD, but in both instances the W2K master boot record will be
overwritten and you'd have to use the Emergency Repair Disk to recover the W2K
boot menu.
Far easier, and safer, is to run the W98 install from the command line within
W2K. W2K will note the install of the additional OS and setup the boot manager
for you.
Regards,
James

Subject: T20 installing win98 with no floppy drive cable?
Hi everyone, I have a bit of a problem as I would like to install win 98 or Me
on my T20 which currently has Win2K on it. The recovery cd's I have are for only
NT and 2K and I wasn't supplied with a cable to link the floppy drive externally
as I had on my previous 600X. Is there any way of installing either 98 or Me
with only the floppy or dvd drive in the bay. I also have an external pcmcia cd
re-writer (HP M820e) could I use this and keep the floppy installed to boot
from? If I have to I will buy the cable or Win98 recovery cd, any idea where I
could obtain one from in the U.K?? Many thanks for reading this.
Regards
Mike Jones.
