Thanks for the many posts to my query. The link which Dominique provided
below proved to be the solution; it leads to the Hardware Maintenance
Manual, which has enough pleasant graphics and cryptic information to allow
me to disembowel my Thinkpad any time I desire.

Did you have a look at the Hardware Maintenance Manual
(http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/LWIK-3ZRKTD.html) for your Thinkpad? It
may give you instructions on how to reach the hard disk.
