Thanks Bill & everyone else for your help on this.
I contacted my local IBM service point today and they have agreed to replace
the drive for me, based on my description of the problem. The guy is
ordering one for me today and will swap the new drive for my old one on
Monday or Tuesday next week. Not bad service!
The noise I decscribed earlier has got slightly worse and more frequent, I
would decsribe it as the same sound as you get when plucking a violin string
only quieter.
I have also noticed that in W98 device manager there is a yellow exclamation
mark beside
"Intel 82371 AB/AD PCI bus master IDE controller" and this is conflicting
with "Standard bus mastering IDE hard disk controller" . I am told by the
sales person I bought the machine from that this is normal for Thinkpads
with W98 and shouldn't be causing my problem.

i guess you're going to have to stay backed up..
another says ez smart does not warn if impending doom..
i have no idea if he is correct or not..
i would guess that the drive is not failing, based upon your earlier
comments, and my own experience of lots of seeking and that msgsrv.dll
thing..
