Laptop was still crashing most painfully, but wonder of wonders - I took it into HK IBM Service center - they said that they would contact me in 2 days.
I got a call that evening on the bus home from the friendly technician saying that he had fixed it - replaced the system board as the RAM WAS faulty, you were all right in your prognosis..
I am totally happy with IBM once again - they rock.
