You should find out what Gateway says is the right memory. CAS2 is indeed
faster than CAS3, but that's overshadowed by the difference between PC100
and PC133 memory. Find out what Gateway says to use and go with that.
Given the cost difference, the fastest memory makes sense.
As for "cheap" memory, it's a gamble. I have seen great buys which have
worked fantastically, and really horrid results. If I had to place any
rules on
the cheap memory working I'd have to say the slower the memory is the
higher chance it has of working OK. I say this because I can think of only
one time a friend got the cheap stuff and had it work in a fast machine (800MHz
Athlon), whereas several friends have had success with memory in older
slower machines. Not a scientific test, I know.
Lately I've been buying memory at crucial. Out of about 250 pieces I've
influenced
the buying of, I think one of them was bad (I didn't see that one--it might
have been
the wrong speed). None of the memory I've personally bought from them has been
bad.
