Greetings all!
I just found this list last night while researching my HD problems; wish
I'd found it a couple of years ago!
I have a 755ce with Win98se and an Apricorn 4 gig HD. Thursday night all
was working fine. Shutdown was normal. Friday morning when I went to boot
it up, Win98 launched into ScanDisk on its own and would not exit the scan.
Probably quite foolishly, I turned off the computer since I didn't have
time to let ScanDisk do its
thing.
Friday evening when I tried to boot up the computer wouldn't recognize the
HD. I did an F1 boot to get Easy Setup, and HDD-1 was not recognized.
Using a DOS disk to boot, the HD was not recognized. Using an IBM
diagnostic disk, the drive was recognized, but returned an error on the
test. After running the diagnostic, I went back to Easy Setup and the
drive was recognized!! So I tried booting from the HD and Win98 started to
come up, but then went into ScanDisk again. More than 24 hours later,
after only doing about 21% of the drive and finding something like 48 bad
clusters, ScanDisk bailed out with some sort of error message and left me
with a blank screen and a blinking cursor.
Now, nothing I do will get the computer to recognize the drive, and I'm
getting Error 174 messages.
Anybody have any ideas? Did I get hit with a virus? Is my HD toast? I've
already ordered a new HD since I need this computer for some special tasks,
but I'd like to know if I can resurrect the drive (hate to throw away a
good drive if it's just something stupid).
Thanks!
