have just purchased a refurbished IBM Thinkpad 770 laptop. This is my
first laptop and I need some help.

I will eventually be running linux on this machine. I will be keeping a
small DOS partition around for the setup utilities. The machine currently
has Win98 installed.

I have some questions about standby, suspend, and hibernation. Being this
is my first laptop these are not familiar concepts.

Fn-F3 puts the computer into standby and any key brings it back just like
the manual says.

Fn-F4 puts the machine into suspend and Fn brings it back just like the
manual says (but is accompianied by some hard disk activity). Closing and
opening the cover also puts the machine into suspend just like the manual
says, but is also accompianied by some hard disk activity.

Fn-F12 should put the system into hibernation, but does nothing.

1. Why is there hard drive activity on suspend. The manual says "stops
all tasks and stores all data in memory". Doesn't mention hard drive. Is
this suspend or is it hibernation?

2. When the system hibernates the manual says "stops all tasks and stores
all data in the hard disk, then powers off". Where on the hard drive? I
have seen talk of dedicated partitions and special files for storing this
data, but I can find none on my hard drive. There are a few tracks left
on the end of the disk (one large fat32 partition) but not enough to hold
all of the 64M memory. Nor is there a likely looking (large enough) file
for use to store memory in. Is this maybe why Fn-F12 doesn't work?

3. I have read somewhere that a hibernate file has to be created with the
PS2 utility. Is this right for a TP770? I don't have this installed on
the hard drive but have downloaded it from ibm.com and will make a floppy.

Where this is all going is that when I fdisk the drive and install DOS and
linux I need to make sure that I keep/make whatever is necessary make all
this work.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.
