This seemed to do the trick with the serial comms, although I can't quite
remember what I did. The utility wouldn't install so I just ran it from the
A drive and it seemed to work OK. I enabled the serial port and the COM
port it was on using it, rebooted and the comms were working. They seem
to work either in a DOS box or if I run the program straight from '98
so I'm happy with this now.

And unfortunately it said 512K. It also said I've got a PentiumII, but it
said it doesn't support the speed testing the utility performs.

Everything here points to the machine being a 600E apart from the
BIOS revision and the system board number. The system board
number might indicate a 600 board, is there any way of finding out?
Would IBM know?

It looks like this might be worth trying now.

Nial.
