Hello All,

Sorry for the two previous messages sent in HTML - let's go plain text now,
and with the same message again : hopefully everybody could read it know...

I'm new to this list, so I will introduce myself a bit...

I'm a frenchman: so I apologize for my far-from-perfect english... ;-)

I use an A21p/DVD-ROM/256MB RAM/32GB HDD under W2K.

I'm very happy with this machine (after a 4 monthes experience).

However, I found that DVD playback and MPEG-coded video playback in general
suffer from a serious "aliasing" problem ("steps" on the edges of objects).
This is very visible if you playback at 320x240, and even 640x480: small
objects and text are noticeably affected. (just try it with a sample .mpg
file: look carefully at the edge of objects and text).

We've tried othe DVD players (PowerDVD, WinDVD), and mpeg players (Real,
WMP), but the problem remains and seem intrisic to the video subsystem or
low-level drivers of the a21p.

As I'm used to work on document while looking at videos, DVDs or TV (thanx
to the UXGA+ display and Pinnacle PCTV USB) and this problem is
disappointing: "small" video playback looks very bad.

Other models of Thinkpads we've here (a21m, a20p) do not seem to show this
problem, even if the overall playback quality is similar or lower.

When we disable DirectX acceleration, the problem disappears... But you can
then only display a video at 320x200, at higher res, the playback is really
bad. And DVD simply does not work without DirectX acceleration.

When I display the picture on an external monitor, the problem does not show
(no aliasing at all and near perfect playback).

Is it due to the 1600x1200 LCD, is it a msiconfiguration of the software
(we're using the preloaded Windows 2000 configuration) ?
Are other a21p users experiencing the same problem ?
What do you think could be done to improve the quality of the playback ?

Thank you for your help

Didier Martin
